A Cancer Patient's Best Friend – NYTimes.com

by Rev. A. J. Iovine

Several times during cancer treatment, people would bring dogs over to the treatment center to spend time with fellow patients. It was always a wonderful time to play with a dog while taking chemo.

One other point about using dogs in helping the sick — churches take part in a comfort dog ministry. The initial outlay costs a church anywhere from $8,000 to $12,000 to find a dog and have it trained for this ministry. But the smiles the animal brings to the faces of the sick — priceless.
