When Was Jesus Crucified?
According to this morning’s The Daily, Jesus was crucified on April 3, 33 AD.
Looking for evidence of earthquakes in the region, the geologists excavated sediment layers at a beach adjacent to the Dead Sea. Annual layers of deposits revealed an early first century quake between A.D. 26 and 36, the period when Pontius Pilate, the Roman official who handed Jesus over for execution, was prefect of Judea.
“The day and date of the crucifixion [Good Friday] are known with a fair degree of precision,” geologist Jefferson Williams told Discovery News. It’s the exact year that’s been in question.
The researchers factored in astronomical calculations, data from the Jewish calendar and other clues from the Bible before finally settling on the date they think is the best match: Friday, April 3, 33 A.D.
