Day 20: A Prayer, Devotion & Worship Video

by Rev. A. J. Iovine

I’ve written about him a number of times, but NJ District’s Urban mission guru Pastor Jim Buchman has a daily devotion/prayer/bible study email he sends out daily. They are always filled with terrific reflections on our lives as God’s children as we walk in this wildly wicked culture. This morning, in his latest email (which, by the way, was also a post of his on his Facebook page), is another wonderful morning wake up.

“Father, You want us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing except losing You, and to lay all our cares on You, knowing that You care for us. Strengthen all who are fighting fear today; protect and keep their faith; for the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking who he can devour. In Jesus’ Name.”

We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,” (Mark 10:33)

 A Fixed Judgment

The word translated “condemn” comes from two words, “judge” & “against

▶ When Jesus was condemned, it was because people had made a judgment against Him.

“Judge” has at it’s root, the idea of separating / picking out

▶ When Jesus was judged, the religious leaders were saying that He did not belong in their community

▶ And that He was so bad, that His separation had to be what they thought was going to be permanent

God had made the judgment years ago in the Garden of Eden:

▶ He would have to right the wrong; there was no way that we could fix our own situation

▶ He would have to pay the cost for a good plan, gone bad.

*Eventually, despite all His efforts to work & walk with us; He would have to take on human form

-He would have to come in the form of the people He had created

Betrayed” and “condemned” are words that can cause us to think we are better than the ones who did this

-But we need to remember that Jesus’ death paid for these sins just like it paid for our sins

Before Jesus returned to Heaven, He said that He would send the Holy Spirit

▶ The Holy Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens & sanctifies the whole Christian church

▶ It is by the Spirit that a dead soul is brought to life

▶ It is by the Spirit that a person who wants nothing to do with God, calls on Jesus as their Savior

▶ It is the Spirit who enables us to call out, “Abba, Father”

God is more than a judge who waits for the court date

▶ He sent His Son so that your debt could be paid

▶ He sent His Spirit to guide you to Him

▶ He gave you His Word to guide you

▶ He established His Church so there would be people to care for you

▶ He gave us Communion to taste His forgiveness today

▶ He gave us baptism in His Son, so that just as He was raised from the dead; we would be also

God is doing everything He can to “fix” your judgment in your favor. If we accept the benefits of this fixed judgment for ourselves; then we must look with charity at others
